There are some ancillary definitions relating to greatest moments, highest achievements and such, plus one dealing with acupuncture. However, the one roughly analogous to longitude interests 12MC the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/browse\/meridian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dictionary.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>me\u00b7rid\u00b7i\u00b7an\u2026<br>(1.) Geography.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>(a.) a great circle of the earth passing through the poles and any given point on the earth\u2019s surface.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>(b.) the half of such a circle included between the poles.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mississippi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve wondered about Meridian, Mississippi for awhile. Land surveys in Mississippi involved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmproject.org\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more that one<\/a> meridian &#8212; Choctaw, Chickasaw and Washington meridians principally &#8212; and none of them fell within the vicinity of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meridianms.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">City of Meridian<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city was borne of a rivalry between two land speculators, Lewis Ragsdale and John Ball. They competed at a place where the Mobile and Ohio Railroad was expected to intersect with the Vicksburg and Montgomery Railroad. The fortunes of many towns coincided with the placement of such railroad lines. So imagine an opportunity that doubled the possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_Meridian,_Mississippi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ball believed<\/a> meridian was a synonym for junction. Ball won that round even with his mistaken assumption. Otherwise Meridian could have been Sowashee or Ragsdale City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d13479.687987315649!2d-88.69288400000002!3d32.36763799999999!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1619523941246!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One can still see the rivalry reflected in the current map of Meridian, MS. Ball created a street grid to align with the railroad tracks. Ragsdale ran his streets along the four cardinal directions. So they collided in a mishmashed array of streets, triangular lots and odd angles that complicates driving a century-and-a-half later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This led me to wonder if other places named Meridian actually coincided with meridians. John Ball may have misunderstood the definition but town founders in other locations seemed to have developed a better grasp of the concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Idaho<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/roadsidepictures\/3778683016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2508\/3778683016_b63a626dc0_b.jpg\" alt=\"The Feed Mill in Meridian, Idaho. Photo by Roadsidepictures; (CC BY-NC 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meridian, Idaho is actually almost double the size of its same-named counterpart in Mississippi. It&#8217;s a bustling area outside of Boise with 75,000 residents. It also has a rather unusual set of boundaries. It looks like a giant mouse has nibbled along all of its edges (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/XLm2gYz1sR92JhUHA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meridian referenced by the city is the Boise Meridian at 116\u00b023&#8217;35&#8221; west, which is the basis of measurement for the entirety of Idaho. I confirmed that the Boise Meridian does indeed <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/oCXfseDd5dDCiTxA8\">intersect the city<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Michigan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Royce-areas-michigan.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/7\/73\/Royce-areas-michigan.jpg\/880px-Royce-areas-michigan.jpg\" alt=\"Royce-areas-michigan. Map by Bureau of American Ethnology, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ditto for Michigan. But in this case it&#8217;s Meridian Charter Township on the edge of East Lansing (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Ztzq8BVCYNSuxD1t6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). Here the Michigan Meridian figured into land surveying for the the state including its Upper Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the &#8220;charter&#8221; part of its name is a Michigan peculiarity. It means the township has been granted certain rights and privileges by state law to provide various municipal services and such. The &#8220;meridian&#8221; part refers to 84\u00b022&#8217;24&#8221; west, the Michigan Meridian, which <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/b4ZG4JMAy2h9T7h68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">absolutely intersects<\/a> Meridian Charter Township.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Texas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/texasphotowrangler\/2278028179\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2185\/2278028179_bf9510f277_c.jpg\" alt=\"Bosque County Courthouse, Meridian, Texas. Photo by Thomas Hyde; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Bosque County Courthouse, Meridian, Texas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meridian (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/SekNMqx1FV1JR5Hi6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>), the seat of local government in Bosque County, Texas provided another opportunity to consult one of my favorite resources, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tshaonline.org\/handbook\/entries\/meridian-tx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Handbook of Texas<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;The origin of the community&#8217;s name is somewhat obscure. Commissioner Jasper N. Mabray proposed the name, which according to legend recognized both Meridian Creek and Meridian Knobs, previously named by Erath for their proximity to the ninety-eighth meridian. The ninety-eighth meridian, however, passes through only a tiny portion of the northwestern corner of Bosque County; nonetheless, the most likely explanation is that the commissioners believed their town lay near a meridian.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Meridian (the town) actually sits about <a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/UDPk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a third of a degree<\/a> east of ninety-eight. I&#8217;ll give them partial credit. They understood that a meridian was located somewhere nearby although their geography was a bit off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alabama<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m24!1m8!1m3!1d418741.49541555106!2d-86.570126!3d34.921054!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m13!3e0!4m5!1s0x886237f80a6ca67d%3A0x4a7c3f192b0a6221!2sState%20Line%2C%20Alabama%2035750!3m2!1d34.9906426!2d-86.5713835!4m5!1s0x88623f0e44d96eff%3A0x1a5135e47a997b72!2sMeridianville%2C%20Alabama!3m2!1d34.851478199999995!2d-86.57221539999999!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1619529642501!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I selected Meridianville, Alabama for the final feature. It&#8217;s still about the meridian here although they chose to append it with a &#8220;ville.&#8221; I couldn&#8217;t find a definitive history online although I did find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waymarking.com\/waymarks\/WMNKYW_Initial_Survey_Point\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the text and location<\/a> of an Alabama historical marker:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Initial Survey Point. In 1809, Major Thomas Freeman, Deputy U.S. Surveyor, established a marker here on the state line and began surveying south toward the middle of the state. This line, known as the Huntsville Meridian, is the reference for all property surveys in North Alabama. The Initial Point, now in the middle of the highway, was reset in 1977 by the Alabama Society of Professional Land Surveyors. [1977: Hwy 231\/431 south of Tennessee line]&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>If one draws a line from the historical marker down to Meridianville, as I have done on the map above, it becomes readily apparent that the Huntsville Meridian does indeed intersect the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many more towns named either Meridian or Meridian-plus-something-else. I tried to discuss the ones with the largest populations. Of course one can always consult the USGS <a href=\"https:\/\/geonames.usgs.gov\/pls\/gnispublic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geographic Names Information System<\/a> to explore the more obscure instances in more detail.
