We seem to have a similar appreciation for maps, odd coincidences and strangely-named places. I first came across Steve and his wonderfully-written CTMQ as I investigated the <a href=\" \/blog\/?p=409\">Southwick Jog<\/a> more than three years ago. I think Mystic Seaport may be the only Connecticut museum I\u2019ve ever visited in my entire life, and yet I read every article he posts. It\u2019s that good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, enough of that. Let\u2019s bring things back into the present and discuss Steve\u2019s latest discovery. He couldn\u2019t wait to tell me &#8212; and of course I couldn\u2019t wait to hear &#8212; all about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sabeth718\/8815829282\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7348\/8815829282_63522d94e2_b.jpg\" alt=\"carnage. Drawing by carnagenyc; (CC BY-NC 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carnage!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d5294.7378518366795!2d-78.63044218525874!3d35.76194458017561!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x89ac5fa6c5f24eaf%3A0xad20b53a8ca5d885!2sCarnage%20Middle%20School!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1613504730189!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He found carnage in Raleigh, North Carolina. Well, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcpss.net\/carnagems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fred J. Carnage Middle School<\/a> on Carnage Drive. I realize that mentioning carnage and school within a single statement can be a bit of a touchy topic in the post-Columbine era. I mean no disrespect and I hope this article doesn\u2019t land me on a travel restriction list (guess I\u2019ll find out the next time I try to board an airline). The larger point is that seeing carnage in this context feels vaguely disconcerting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unmasking Carnage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We are all led by our personality quirks. My natural and completely predictable next step was to try to unmask the identity of Fred J. Carnage. This led me to an article in the Raleigh Times that unfortunately is no longer available online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway the gist of it was that Mr. Carnage had just been appointed to the local school board. He had an impressive r\u00e9sum\u00e9: a graduate of Harvard Law School; a distinguished career as an attorney; a high-level member of prestigious civic organizations; and an appointee of various government boards and commissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, did I mention that this was in 1949?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that Mr. Carnage was African-American?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that only a third of Raleigh students at the time were African-American?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;The recipient of this appointment is a tall-gray-haired practitioner of the law in Raleigh for 17 years whose position in the city is such that in the weeks following the appointment, Mayor P. D. Snipes observed that not a single note of criticism was received by him of residents of this southern community about the selection of a representative of a minority group for this responsible position.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applauding Carnage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of things came to mind as I pondered the context of that specific geography and that troublesome slice of history. First, Fred J. Carnage must have been an amazing man to accomplish what he did when so many opportunities would have been denied to him by definition. He recorded a lifetime of &#8220;firsts&#8221; as an African American.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, we tend to think of prejudice in the American South during that period as being somewhat monolithic. Yet, here was an instance where perhaps a more nuanced view might be warranted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slaughter!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d1571.2585306105111!2d-78.51865944389544!3d38.03503677971284!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x89b3865852e5938f%3A0xc1429bce1466cb91!2sSlaughter%20Recreation%20Center!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1613513416263!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thought of carnage led me to reminisce about my undergraduate days long ago at the University of Virginia. There we had the Slaughter Recreation Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Commonwealth one might think of &#8220;slaughter recreation&#8221; as a euphemism pertaining to <a href=\"https:\/\/dwr.virginia.gov\/hunting\/regulations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our penchant for hunting<\/a>. Or maybe our relaxed view of firearms restrictions in general. However, let me assure the 12MC audience that the recreational facility fit a more typical model of indoor basketball, squash courts, exercise equipment and the like. It was <a href=\"https:\/\/recsports.virginia.edu\/src\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">named for<\/a> &#8220;<em>Edward R. \u2018Butch\u2019 Slaughter, a Charlottesville resident who was Director of Intramurals at the University of Virginia from 1958 until his retirement in 1973<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mayhem!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d1797.5492903733063!2d27.230814655726487!3d-25.70115988366428!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x1ebe090ff2e6ceed%3A0xca2aec2562425955!2sMahem%20Ave%2C%20Safari%20Tuine%2C%20Rustenburg%2C%202999%2C%20South%20Africa!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1613513912213!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t know about any actual mayhem but I thought it sounded good in the title. Google Maps was kind enough to suggest Mayhem Avenue in Rustenburg, South Africa, just west of Pretoria. Street View suggests it\u2019s probably the antithesis of mayhem. It seems to be a tidy, orderly, affluent street. And they spelled it funny. But we know what they meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I discovered a few other likely candidates as well<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Massacre Lane and Massacre Pond, in Scarborough, Maine (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Sxw2rqMEeYPuTAEy7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). There are lots of &#8220;massacre&#8221; places in the United States, many of them associated with attacks on settlers by displaced Native Americans forced from their land.<\/li><li>Berserker, Queensland, Australia (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/BDcvLH9rRqvtM9Nx5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). An entire neighborhood gone berserk!<\/li><li>Murder Lane, Rison, Arkansas (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/2xTqv5rUE7LVpG768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). This one looks like someone\u2019s driveway. I am going to guess that they don\u2019t want or receive many visitors.<\/li><li>Blood Cemetery, Dunstable, Massachusetts (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/YbR5bGmgjhABsCiR8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). A perfect spot for a Halloween party.<\/li><li>Headless Cross Drive, Redditch, Worcestershire, England (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/vbE1FX4LFEFPxoX89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).
