Photo by fortunecookie; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This has been a long time coming. We couldn\u2019t meet just anywhere. It had to involve <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=2373\">a genuine geo-oddity of sufficient stature<\/a> befitting this group. Venue became critically important. The idea smoldered for a year after our initial choice &#8212; an Irish themed pub &#8212; went out of business. Flash forward to 2012 and the Irish Pub has been replaced by a Memphis BBQ joint. The concept now moves towards reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Details<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1ziJRil0vEQ4DMU7iZhg7qsv7rQQ\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>American Meridian Happy Hour<\/strong><br>Tuesday, January 24, 2012<br>5:30 p.m.<br>Memphis Barbeque<br><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/N7cNfnFrpe3w8KR3A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">320 S. 23rd Street, Arlington, VA<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Closest Metro Station: Crystal City<br>Closest CaBi rack: half a block away at 23rd St. &amp; Crystal Dr.<br>Parking: The garage somewhat across the street at 223 S. 23rd St. has free parking after 4:00 pm, as does the garage around the corner at 2200 Crystal Dr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[<em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=10127#happy\">We had a great time<\/a>!<\/em>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Fine Print<br><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">I\u2019ll be there at 5:30 and I\u2019ll stick around at least long enough to have a beer. I\u2019ll feel like a loser if nobody else shows up in which case I\u2019ll probably sneak out by 6:00. I don\u2019t have any clue what any of you looks like so you\u2019ll need to be able to <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=2824\">pick me from a lineup<\/a> (hope you can figure out which one is me). I\u2019ll try to provide more definitive identifying information by email the day of the event to those who let me know they plan to attend. I\u2019ll have to wear something other than the typical Washington, DC gray suit that day. Hmm\u2026 let me think about that. Well, nobody is absolutely sure the meridian goes exactly through Memphis Barbeque. <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=6673\">The meridian seems to have varied ever-so-slightly over the years<\/a>. A completely straight line from the dome of the Naval Observatory actually seems to cut through the Chinese restaurant next door. It\u2019s hard to tell. I\u2019d prefer a beer over Chinese buffet and it\u2019s all within the margin of error anyway. It\u2019s OK. Don\u2019t get too hung-up on the details. You\u2019ll still get credit for crossing between hemispheres.
