I have visited Dogfish Head Brewery in Rehoboth Beach, Sussex County, Delaware, USA; and Dogfish Head's Microbrewery in Milton, Sussex County, Delaware, USA.

Brewery/Brewpub Location Map

Reason for Visit: It was a cold winter weekend and we wanted to get out of town, but we didn't want to deal with lots of crowds. There is no better place for some relaxing quiet than a beach in the middle of winter [see my Winter Day in Rehoboth Beach page]. Nonetheless Dogfish Head had a pretty decent dinner crowd, and it was warm and inviting. I can't even imagine how crowded it must get during the summer when Rehoboth Beach is overrun by vacationers. They also operate a small distillery where they produce vodka, rum, gin and tequila!

Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats Interior Interior: Many of the brewpubs I visit happen only a single time as I travel from place to place. Once in a great while, there is a brewpub that is so superior that I'll go out of my way to return whenever I can. Dogfish head is such a place. I took this photograph on one of my return trips in early 2008. On this visit they had their 120 Minute IPA and Palo Santo Marron ("Malt Beverage aged on Palo Santo Wood") on tap along with their usual selection. Outstanding!
Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats Exterior Exterior: The brewpub includes an off-premise retail storefront facing outward from the front of the building toward the street. People can walk right up from the sidewalk to purchase their favorite beers to go along with all kinds of shirts, hats, glasses, or just about any other promotional item imaginable.

It will go into storage in my basement for the next five years or so. For those of you unfamiliar with this magical elixir, it is described as, "What you have here is the holy grail for hopheads. The beer is continually hopped over a 120-minute boil and then dry-hopped every day for a month."

The best thing is that this was less than half the price I would have paid for the same bottle inside the brewpub for immediate consumption.

Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats T-Shirt (front) T-Shirt (front): A small version of the Dogfish Head logo with the name of the brewery appears on the front of the T-shirt
Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats T-Shirt (back) T-Shirt (back): A shark cuts across the entire upper back of the shirt. There is no writing, just the shark.
Dogfish Head Brewery Lobby Brewery Lobby: After a very long time of wanting to visit Dogfish Head's microbrewery in Milton, Delaware, we finally made a special trip out there to catch one of their summertime Saturday afternoon tours. The group assembles here in the large lobby entrance to wait for the tour, and returns here upon its conclusion for brewery-fresh samples. Various merchandise and promotional items decorate the wall above the bar.
Dogfish Head Brew Kettles Boiling: The brew kettle sits to the right of the control room. Access is gained by using the black metal staircase on the middle-right side of the photo. Grain is transported to the kettle by way of a pipe that runs along the ceiling. A pallet of raisin extract rests in the foreground, destined no doubt for Dogfish's Raison D'Etre ale
Dogfish Head Brewery Fermenting Tanks Fermenting: These large tanks are fermenters. The sheer number and size gives a pretty good indication of the brewery's capacity. It's a bit tough to see but on the floor near the back is a small silver tank with a red hose sticking out of it. That's a Dogfish Head invention called the "Ooh Me So Hoppy" Machine. Just in case their beers aren't hoppy enough, they can run it through Me So Hoppy and bump it up even more. We loved the wordplay of Me So Hoppy. If you don't understand that reference it's truly your loss.
