The Azores (Açores)

Portugal (March 2001)

Also be sure to see the Travel/Geography Blog

The Azores is a chain of nine inhabited islands about 1000 miles west of mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. While this location may seem remote it's actually pretty easy to reach using direct flights from Boston and other locations in North America. The flight takes only about five hours.

During our stay we visited four of the islands: Faial, Pico, São Miguel and Terceira. All of them featured beautiful scenery and a relaxed atmosphere, but each island has its own distinct personality.
