Crossing the Mississippi

It's easy to cross the Mississippi River at its source

Lake Itasca

The Mississippi River begins its long journey in northern Minnesota at Lake Itasca. Here the Mississippi is a small stream that can be crossed easily on foot using conveniently placed stepping-stones. It gives no indication of its 2,552 mile journey or the "mighty" force it will later become. We had most of Itasca State Park to ourselves except directly at the headwaters where many of the visitors seemed to congregate. We hardly saw anyone else along the Wilderness Drive on the western side of the park. This gave us an opportunity for some light hiking, although nothing like our hikes in Hawaii or Oregon. It was quite enjoyable other than the unusually aggressive mosquitoes.
