St. Martin Parish is an odd situation. It has a sizable chunk located to the southeast cut off completely from the remainder of the parish by Iberia Parish; a separation of several miles. The St. Martin Parish Clerk of the Court webpage explains, "In 1868, Iberia Parish was formed from parts of St. Martin and St. Mary Parishes. As a result of this separation, compounded by a surveyor's error, St. Martin Parish has two non-contiguous parts."

Many people travel through the northern portion of St. Martin Parish as they drive along Interstate 10 through Louisiana. Visiting the southern portion requires more effort. Most of it is swamp and there's only one real road through it. The photographs above were taken at the southern end of that southern piece, approached via the town of Morgan City in neighboring St. Mary Parish.
