- 09 Mar 1905, Thu; Page 9: "George EMIG went to Hamilton, Ohio, yesterday at the request of Mrs. Louis HOWDER, of Front street, in search of her husband, who has been missing since last Thursday. HOWDER was located at a car shop, where he had secured employment. He told EMIG that he would not return home, but promised to write a leter to his family. HOWDER had just recovered from an attack of the grip. His wife and six children are anxious that he return home. He was employed by a Cincinnati grocery up to the time of his disappearance."

- 26 Apr 1906, Thu; Page 12: "HOWDER DISAPPEARED And His Wife Fears That Foul Play Has Befallen Him. Mrs. Louis H. HOWDER and seven little children, residing at 208 Front street. Bellevue. Ky., are grieving over the absence of a husband and father, who has been mysteriously missing since April 5. Mr. HOWDER is a car inspector on tbe Interurban Line at Deer Park. He had been doing night work, and just three weeks ago today he left home for his place of employment. The railroad people say he reported for work that evening and after drawing his salary left, ostensibly for home. That was the last seen of him. Mrs. HOWDER stated yesterday that she fears some evil has befallen her husband. He had just recovered from a case of grip, which left him in a weak condition. He is 45 years of age, five feet six inches in height and has a dark mustache. He had on a dark suit of work clothes. The wife and family are left in destitute circumstances."

- May 16, 1886: At time of discharge was commanded by Capt. John L. TERNAN. Height 5'6", light complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes. Contracted typhoid pneumonia about March 10, 1886 at Newport Barracks, KY, and was in the hospital to about May 1. "That he applied for reenlistment, but was rejected after examination." Occupation after Army listed as something related to street cars (incomprehensible handwriting), part time. When enrolled was a farmer.
- September 20, 1886: Living at 321 Monmoth St., Newport, KY. Alleges "Typhoid pneumonia resulting inflammation left lung & abscess left side & right hip."
- December 22, 1886: Documents show that during his enlistment he had been stationed at Mt. Vernon Barracks, Alabama; Camp Mitchell, Atlanta Georgia; Ft. Barraucas, Florida; and Newport Barracks, Kentucky.
- July 5, 1887: Married Jane Frances Hayes.
- July 2, 1888: "he has had no medical treatment since his discharge... because he is poor and because he did not believe it would do him any good."
- October 30, 1894: From an affidavit of Jennie HOWDER. "I first got acquainted with him in Newport, KY in the fall of 1885 he was at that time doing military duty at the Government Barracks..." "I met him once a month to the 16th day of May 1886 the date of his discharge from the U.S. Service." "In the month of June 1886 he had a severe attack of throat and head trouble... and was delirious, and he did not at that time recognize me though we were engaged to be married."

- March 18, 1927: Birthday explicitly listed as October 14, 1860, "That he also desires to claim pension for disease of head, nose and throat, contracted at Newport Barracks, Kentucky, from exposure in 1885, exact date not remembered, but was treated for said head, nose and throat troubles at the Hospital, Newport Barracks, Kentucky."
- April 21, 1927: He had been a Watchman at the Government Printing Office since 1908. He had a "dancing girl" tattoo on his right forearm. He was "sallow, anemic and considerably debilitated."
- November 22, 1928: Passed away. Information from death certificate (No. 316767). Died at 1228 Trinidad Ave., NE. 2:15 am. Had lived in Washington, DC for 20 year 1 month. Cause of death was Grippe, and contributory cause was Lobar Pneumonia. Undertaker was W.W. Deal Co. 816 H St. NE. He was the husband of Jane Frances HAYES who supplied the following information: born October 14, 1859 [this contradicts every other document found, including many with his original signature, and is probably in error]. Watchman at the Government Printing Office. Born Lockport, NY. Father " --- HOWDER" born in NY. Mother "--- PRIEST" born in North Dakota [also contradicted by all other documentation].
- November 24, 1928: Buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington VA.
- December 5, 1928: "The death of this pensioner on November 22, 1928, was reported to this Bureau over the 'phone, when a declaration for widow's pension was requested to be mailed to Jane F. HOWDER, 1228 Trinidad Avenue N.E. Washington, D.C."
- December 22, 1928: "Sirs: Before my late husband's death he filed a claim for an increase in the amount of his pension. To date no action has been taken on this claim and is my desire to continue it..." - Jennie HOWDER (original handwritten letter).

Marker made of white marble and in very good shape [I have since learned that this is not the original marker; it was replaced at the family's request in the 1990's because it didn't list his wife]. Front reads LEWIS H HOWDER CPL CO B 3 ARTY NOV 22 1928. Back reads 17 21321 JANE F HIS WIFE JAN 2 1929.

(18) Interview with Camille M. (O'Connor) Howder (1906-1996), daughter-in-law of Lewis Howder.

- The family was raised at N. Capitol & K. Sts., Washington, DC in an area called "Swampoodle." His sons went to Gonzaga High School. The family later lived on Trinidad Ave., DC.
- His son Louis and Camille lived on Trinidad Ave. for perhaps 3 years after marriage. Lewis (the father) never discussed his family, per Camille, worked nights, and spent most of his free time working in the basement on carpentry projects.

- Lewis Howder was raised by his uncle. He reputedly left as soon as he became an adult because he felt he wasn't being treated well.
- His sister-in-law, Mary HAYES BURKE, moved to Washington, DC to work for Sen. Joseph Benson FORAKER (R-Ohio) when he was elected to office. Sen. FORAKER was able to arrange a job at the Government Printing Office for Lewis HOWDER so the moved the family to Washington.
