Samuel Mathews is the son of Nathaniel and Barbara Mathews. He is 12
years old, born in Michigan and is attending school.

Samuel L. Mathews, Co. A, 1st Michigan Cavalry (Union). Rank In =
Private, Rank Out = Corporal. Film Number M545 roll 26. During his
period of enlistment the unit served in the battle of the Wilderness,
then in the Shenandoah Valley, through to Appomattox Court House. The
unit then served on the frontier after the war to March 1866 before
mustering out.
