The unit served in many famous engagements including Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg and Appomattox Court House. The unit was participating in the siege of Petersburg at the time Theodore Mathews was wounded.
