- Met and married Charles Steele in 1919. He was serving in the Army at the time and was stationed at Fort Eustis, VA.
- The family moved to Millvale, near Pittsburgh, PA sometime after the birth of their first child in the early 1920's.
- Moved to Glenshaw PA (also near Pittsburgh, but further out in the country) sometime after the birth of Margaret, where Charles ran a small grocery store.
- Moved briefly back to Millvale, then to Washington, DC sometime after Helen's birth.
- Charles left the family in August 1933, never to return and whereabouts unknown.
- Marie was left to raise her children alone during the Great Depression; Helen was sent to live with an aunt in Ohio. Marie was able to preserve the family in spite of these hardships.
