SPECIAL NOTES ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF LOUISA HOWDER AS LOUISA MALONEY.

The Charles H. Warren letter to George R. Howder, February 6, 1886 mentions that, "Mother [Sophrania Howder Warren] had a letter from her sister, Mrs. Daniel Maloney of Osseo, Hillsdale [County, Michigan], be they are all well and send their love to all the friends."

We know that Sophrania Howder Warren had seven sisters. By a process of elimination looking at marriages, geographic placement, and dates of birth and death, it quickly becomes apparent that only two of Sophrania's sisters could be Mrs. Daniel Maloney:

(A) Mary Howder (b. abt. 1817) and (B) Eliza/Louisa Howder (b. abt. 1819), who were both living in Niagara Co., NY in 1832.

There is only one Daniel Malon(e)y household listed in the 1880 Census for Hillsdale Co., MI, and only four in the entire state. The 1850, 1870, and 1880 Census records all list Daniel "Malony" and family as residents of Jefferson Township, Hillsdale Co., MI. The 1870 Census lists the post office for Jefferson Township as Osseo. Therefore it is likely that these records must have referenced the same "Mrs. Daniel Maloney of Osseo, Hillsdale" that was mentioned in the 1886 Charles H. Warren letter.

Daniel "Malony's" wife is listed as Louisa (1850 & 1880 Census) or Loiza (1870 Census). The three census records disagree somewhat in reference to her age, but place her birth somewhere between 1816 and 1820. However, there is no mention of anyone named Mary.

The application for probate of the last will and testament of Christian Howder, Niagara Co., NY, May 28, 1832, includes the names of his surviving children. The handwriting is very difficult to read but the name "Eliza," a minor child, appears to be listed. However on a different document issued the same day, the appointment of Jacob Housteter to represent the interests of Christian Howder's minor children, the name of the child is neatly and legibly written "Louisa."

Therefore the conclusion is that Eliza/Louisa (not Mary), daughter of Christian Howder of Niagara Co., NY, is Mrs. Daniel Maloney of Osseo, Hillsdale Co., MI.
