Notes

[NI0220] Updated December 22, 2004. Compiled by Howder (www.howderfamily.comm) from the following source(s):

(1) National Park Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailor System Search by Soldier Name (database).

Daniel R. Sylvester, Co. K, 12th Wisconsin Infantry (Union). Rank In = Captain, Rank Out = Captain, alternate name = D. R. Sylvester. Film Number M559 roll 29.

(2) 1870 United States Census for Wisconsin, Grant Co., Blue River (Muscoda Post Office): pages 4-5; dwelling 25; family 27; August 12, 1870.

D. R. Sylvester is head of household, married to Clara H. [Hanship] Sylvester. He was born in Maine, is 43 years old and operates a mill, with real estate valued at $7,000 and personal estate valued at $1,100. He is eligible to vote. Children listed in the household are: Velma, Asa B., Myrtie, Fred W., Rena, Harry E., Gracie, and Bonny. Daniel's father Charles Sylvester is also a resident.

Next door is the family of N. (?) Marion and Maria Sylvester. I have not yet connected this branch to the rest of the extended Sylvester family although the proximity certainly supports the possibility.

(3) 1880 United States Census for Wisconsin, Grant Co., Castle Rock: page 15; supervisor district 2; enumeration district 102; dwelling 127; family 127; June 21, 1870.

(4) Sampson, Gertrude Sylvester, 1842-1925, "A biographical history of the ancestry of Julian Carroll Sampson [manuscript] : embracing that of his wife Bertha Sylvester Sampson, including all data obtainable by those who are connected in these two direct lines of William and Obediah Sylvester and Abraham Samson." The New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) Library, Boston, MA.

- Cousin of [Ariana] Gertrude [Sylvester] Sampson, author of the source cited above.
- Formed Co. K, 12th Wisconsin Infantry in Boscobel, WI in 1861, and was elected Captain. His cousin's husband, Albert S. Sampson joined the company and Capt. Sylvester appointed him 2nd Sargeant and secretary (page 55).
- He drilled in Boscobel for a few weeks (page 55).
- He then went with Co. K to Camp Randall in Madison, Wisconsin before heading off to war (page 56).
- The Winter of 1862 was difficult, and he was often riding on freight cars, and with little food (page 56).
- On January 13, 1862, he was along the Mississippi River, opposite Hannibal, Missouri, where it was bitter cold. (page 56).
- On September 15, 1862 he recommended Albert S. Sampson for a promotion (who then left the Company for his new position) (page 56).

(5) Family History, Volume S(4), Sylvester, Daughters of the American Revolution library, Washington, DC., p. 3.
