USA’s Worst Weather

We’re #1! There are many times in one’s life when that’s a fantastic proclamation and a source of pride. It could be when a favorite sports team wins the big championship. Maybe it’s a university with a top-ranked academic department. Or perhaps it’s a city judged to be the best place to raise a family. There are other lists, however, where nobody wants appear at the top: crime; obesity and school drop-out rates come to mind.

Well This One Sucks

I knew I’d suffered through some pretty lousy weather in the Washington, DC area (map) during the summer of 2010 but now it’s official: the Weather Channel proclaimed that the my hometown endured the worst weather in the United States these last few months.

Your Weather Sucks

We had it all. Drought settled in during June and into July. Bruising thunderstorms pounded the area several times and uprooted hundreds of trees in early August. Blistering heat moved-in for the long haul. The temperature rose to 90° Fahrenheit (32.2° c.) or higher on 67 separate days and as recently as last Saturday. It’s wasn’t all terrible for me though. Thankfully I was sitting in Alaska wearing a light jacket because of the chill in the air on the day it hit 103° (39.4° c.) back in DC.

This followed a brutal winter where we set snowfall records but the Weather Channel rated us only in second place back then. First place for summer and second place for winter, and with that I think we have a really good shot at having the lousiest weather in the United States for 2010!

We’re #1!

I’m quite happy you’ve taken the title from my adopted hometown of Cleveland. You can keep it!

No, that’s OK. One year is quite sufficient. 😉

Unrelatedly, did you see the Strange Maps post about this piece of the .it/.ch border? http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=46.477945,9.466953&spn=0.072582,0.132008&t=h&z=13

I did! I saw it on my Google Reader yesterday morning, and a couple of people emailed me off-line about it too. I thought to myself, hey, he’s straying into Twelve Mile Circle territory, but that’s perfectly fine because I’ve strayed into Strange Maps territory too. It’s all good. Now if I could only find a way to attract even 1% of his traffic…

I read somewhere that in the 19th century, DC was considered a tropical posting for ambassadors from Europe.
