Only Rhode Island and Delaware are Smaller in Size than this State

It’s homework time again. Somewhere some geography teacher must be handing out a take-home quiz because I’m getting pinged with identical Google queries from multiple sources. They all read, “Only Rhode Island and Delaware are smaller in size than this state.”

Regular readers should feel free to skip today’s article which I’m presenting as a Public Service Announcement; something I do from time to time when I’m feeling magnanimous. Think of the children. Yes, think of those poor children left to struggle with their homework. I can’t let those kids down.

Connecticut!

Let’s compare land areas (map).

  • Smallest: Rhode Island = 1,044.93 square miles
  • Second Smallest: Delaware = 1,953.56 square miles
  • Third Smallest: Connecticut = 4,844.80 square miles

The same ratio holds true even when considering their territorial waters according to Wikipedia’s List of U.S. states and territories by area. Thus, whether one defines “smaller” as land area alone or land combined with territorial waters, the answer remains Connecticut.

We now return to our regularly-scheduled Twelve Mile Circle.
