12MC and Social Networking

Twelve Mile Circle has been cruising right along rather nicely for the last four-plus years. Even so, I haven’t expanded beyond a blog format with a simple RSS feed. Frankly, I’ve never seen much need for it.

However, I do receive occasional friend requests from the loyal readership for various social networks. They’ll sit in my inbox for awhile and eventually I’ll forget about them. That’s not because I’m a cold-heart brute but because social networking accounts don’t exist for 12MC. Well, today that changed.

Google+

I finally overcame the inertia and activated a Google+ for my existing twelvemilecircle gmail account. It took awhile to come to that decision but I think I finally found a purpose for it. It’s where I can post a lot of the “totally unrelated” non sequiturs I’ve included at the bottom of my articles lately. I can also use it for items so completely trivial that they wouldn’t even qualify for that. You know, all the crap.

You’ll also get to see some of the really strange search terms that drop on the site randomly. Those include gems like “what do guys in Arizona look like” and “why is Florida a populated place” and “weird vacation alone in Key West”. You might even get to see the seeds of thoughts that will eventually become full-blown articles. So here’s your chance to peek behind the curtain.

I’ve added those of you who previously reached-out to me via Google+ with invitations that I hadn’t answered until today. For everyone else, feel free to let me know if you have a Google+ account. If so, I can add you to the 12MC circle. Yes, I’ve created a Twelve Mile Circle Circle. Isn’t redundancy grand? So get in touch.

[UPDATE: Google abandoned the Google+ platform in 2019]

Facebook

Well, some of you have asked. Even so, I still can’t bring myself to join Facebook for philosophical reasons. However, I am absolutely not a Luddite.

Perhaps I have unreasonable jumbo-sized expectations of privacy. Even so, here I continue to remain the last person in the Western world without a Facebook account. It’s kind of become a perverse badge-of-honor thing for me at this point.

I get to be all smug and everything whenever Facebook changes its terms of service or has a data breach. Then I’m insufferable. It’s a running joke I maintain with friends and family alike. Even my mom is on Facebook, although my dad is not. Admittedly, he’s on record as saying he “needs to find out about that Internet thing someday.” So there’s hope.

Yes, I know Google+ isn’t that much different but I think of it as being perhaps a notch less evil. Maybe I’m fooling myself. Oh, and I use my wife’s Facebook account on occasion — with her permission of course and under the condition that she gets to roll her eyes at me for my hypocrisy whenever she likes.

[UPDATE: Twelve Mile Circle never opened a Facebook account, thank goodness]

Twitter

And Twitter? I don’t know. I’m not opposed to it and I read a lot of Twitter feeds. Would it really add value beyond Google+ for 12MC purposes? I guess the audience could persuade me if enough people express some interest. A lot of the good names similar to my blog are already taken. A band called Twelve Mile Circle took the best one. That’s okay. I’m sure they were miffed when they discovered that I snagged twelvemilecircle.com solely as a redirect to my site.

[UPDATE: the 12MC Twitter account has been rather active at The Real12MC since 2013]

Just wanted to say for those of us that do not have or plan to have Google + that we still enjoy the “totally unrelated” items you plan on moving to Google + and I for one hope you continue to offer it here on the website. There have been at least a couple times where I skimmed/quickly read an article I wasn’t particularly interested in only to find some interesting off topic tidbits at the bottom.

No worries, Joe — I’ll keep doing that. They’ll probably find their way quicker to Google+ (right as I find them) and in a much less sanitized stream-of-consciousness version. Google+ will also get the true crΓ¨me de la weird stuff that would never make it onto blog anyway. 12MC will always continue to get the "greatest hits" though.

Long time* lurker (Moscow, Russia – I hope you did notice the blip), first time poster – just to say that I’ve specifically created a Google+ account just to start following you! (No, seriously. I doubt I would ever do much else with my Google+ account – unless I ever want to publicize my real name, which is unlikely within the next few weeks but fairly likely before 2016 or so.)
And if you will add me in your circle, I’ll gladly send you whatever info I currently have on various geo-oddities, including one that will certainly interest a good part of this site’s audience πŸ˜‰

    So what, how? πŸ™‚

*) Well, a month and a half, actually – hoped it would be longer, but unfortunately I didn’t quite find your site before last November.
**) Not my real name, obviously (not that you’ll be able to either spell or pronounce the real thing correctly). At Google+, I’m officially January Firstofmay, which is about as well an approximation as they would take, but still rather far from real. πŸ™‚ (I’m thinking of changing to Vasya Pupkin [a traditional Russian fake name] if they do notice the current fakery. The username dates back to 2007, BTW, and references some geography – if not quite to the geo-oddity level.)

I totally understand. Google+ thinks my first name is Twelve and my surname is Mile Circle. Oh, and of course I noticed the Moscow blip. πŸ™‚ I get a lot of good material for 12MC articles from those types of anomalies, and I check the Google Analytics maps every day.

Just happened to stumble on this comment. “2016 or so”, ha ha. No closer to it now than I was back then. (I’ve since made a few YouTube comments as well, but your account continues to be the main reason I use Google+ – in the very rare cases I do, anyway.)

Incidentally, I’m surprised that my introduction to 12MC was as late as November 2011 – I was sure it must have been a lot earlier.

(I wonder what very interesting geo-oddity I was thinking of back in January 2012? I suppose it could have been double exclaves – the one thing I would’ve made a similar claim about today – but I don’t think I was interested in them until I visited one, much later.)

Long time lurker as well and you’ve gotten my butt around to Google+. The only other “social media” site I’ve been on for a while is Reddit (and I actually posted your site to a small “subreddit” called geography http://www.reddit.com/r/geography/comments/muj4j/i_fucking_love_geooddities_twelve_mile_circle_is/). Looking forward to the odds and ends!

That small mention on Reddit sent a two-day surge of about 1,500 viewers and 20 new subscribers to 12MC, so feel free to do more of that anytime!

i have faced a lot of people who feel that G+ is somehow more ethically acceptable than facebook. to that i can only reply that both facebook and google exist for only one reason: to sell ad space. both companies a merely gigantic data mines and the users provide the raw data. google is somehow perceived as being a better option, but this could not be any further from the truth. i don’t find either of them more or less ethically acceptable than the other. google is perhaps more insidious with their uses of the data that you generate for them because people are willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

you are providing input for gigantic targeted marketing platforms no matter what social networking site you use. picking one over another for ‘philosophical reasons’ is a bit naive in my opinion.

anyway… off of my soapbox… great blog.

Just added you on Google+ and sent an e-mail request to be added by you. Thanks!

As for Facebook, I get it β€” but I would love, love, love to see you on Twitter. Honestly, I’m not so big on Google+, and I get people’s objections to Facebook (though I use it far more often than Google+) β€” I tend to prefer Twitter over Facebook for interacting with people I don’t know personally anyway.

Hi! Just added you on Google+…Don’t use it much, so I hope I’m doing it right. If you see rosenblatt.sarah pop up, though, that’s me! Been a long time reader and I love your blog. My dad cultivated a love of maps in me when I was very young, so it’s a great place to find fun stuff (which I often pass on to him). Keep it up!
